This beautiful native perennial enjoys a long season of interest from mid to late summer and supplies winter bird food. The lavender tufted flowers begin blooming at the top and work their way down the single stem. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves stay attractive all summer and turn a rich bronze in fall. Easy to grow and low care, and one of the few Liatris species that grows well in very moist soils. It is tolerant of poor soils, drought, summer heat and humidity.

Plant seeds in the autumn after the first frost. Gently press seeds down, but don't cover. Water once, then leave them to sprout in the spring. Alternatively, you can cold stratify seeds by placing them on a damp paper towel, fold it over, place them in a recloseable plastic bag then keep in the refrigerator. It is recommended that seeds be cold stratified for at least 60 days. Start seeds inside 6 weeks before the last frost in spring. No need to cover the seeds with soil, just press down into the soil. Keep seeds moist during germination. Transplant outside after the seedlings have four or five leaves.
